LOS ANGELES – October 16, 2018 VYCON (www.vyconenergy.com) announces that it has just shipped its 1500th flywheel system. VYCON’s clean-energy storage systems are deployed worldwide and provide unsurpassed power backup and power regeneration to mission-critical applications.

Reliability, efficiency, cooling issues, space constraints, recurring battery costs, and environmental issues are the prime drivers for implementing flywheel energy storage. Data centers, co-location facilities, hospitals, universities, broadcast studios and manufacturing plants around the globe rely on VYCON’s VDC clean energy storage systems to protect critical computing processes and equipment from damaging and costly power outages.

VYCON’s flywheel systems bring unprecedented power capacity for instantaneous and reliable power backup and provide a greener and cost-saving solution to uninterruptible power systems (UPSs) that are using batteries. VYCON’s REGEN flywheel systems, used in regenerative power applications such as light electric rail and microgrids, reduce power and energy costs while providing a reduction in greenhouse gasses.

The ability to discharge and recharge very quickly when called upon during power outages ensure the superior performance and dependability of these systems. VYCON’s installed base of VDC  and REGEN systems have logged a record 48,500,000 operating hours and 22,300,000 discharge and recharge cycles – in extremely demanding power applications that frequently call on the VYCON systems to discharge and recharge every two minutes.

“We’re very excited to reach this important milestone for our flywheel fleet deployed in energy-intensive applications around the world,” said VYCON’s President Frank DeLattre. “System uptime and availability are prime concerns for our customers. The eco-friendly technology of our VDC and REGEN flywheel systems offer this reliability as well as cost savings. Using our flywheel versus a five-minute VRLA battery bank can result in $100,000 to $200,000 in cost savings per flywheel deployed. Moreover, with our contact-free magnetic levitation system, there are no bearings to replace – saving customers $10,000 in bearing replacement compared to competing technologies.”

Utilizing VYCON’s patented flywheel technology, the 300kW VDC-XXE and 450kW VDC-XXT flywheel systems store and deliver a secure and reliable source of DC power using the kinetic energy of the high-speed flywheel. The scalable VDC systems with a footprint less than half that of lead-acid batteries, provide clean ride-through backup power that is predictable and seamless. The VDC units can replace or work in tandem with batteries to provide the most reliable, instantaneous, on-demand power. For energy recycling applications such as those for electric rail, microgrids, medical imaging, and industrial systems, VYCON’s REGEN systems capture regenerative electrical energy and stores it in the form of kinetic energy until converted back into electrical energy when needed.

Tested and compatible with all major brands of three-phase UPS systems and available from VYCON’s global channel partners including ABB/GE, Eaton, Mitsubishi, Riello UPS, Schneider Electric, Socomec and Vertiv, the VDC units feature over 99.4% efficiency and a 20-year life without a major service interval. Featuring optimized power electronics and full 5-axis active magnetic levitation for significantly improved power density and near zero maintenance requirements, the energy storage systems replace traditional lead-acid backup batteries used with UPS systems – providing users with a smarter and greener approach to power protection.

Flywheel energy storage has become a strategic solution for customers’ mission-critical applications that require reliable power while reducing their carbon footprint.  Flywheels are capable of millions of full charge and discharge cycles over the life of the system with no degradation in voltage, power, or storage – unlike batteries. Flywheels are also considered the most eco-friendly of all the energy storage technologies.
